+ Divination and fortune-telling were very common. The poor, especially women, were abused by doing magic and witchcraft. This girl's masters were making a large profit by her fortune-telling. When Paul and his companions went to the river, to the prayer meeting, a demon-possessed slave girl met them there. Apparently, she was bothering them, so Paul turned around and cast the demon out of her and he came out that very hour.
